- The layers, presented in this WebGIS tool, map the ecosystem services - such as honey, timber, water and carbon sequestration - provided by a range of habitats on St Helena. They also show the optimal locations for expanding these services and how other ecosystem services might be positively or negatively impacted as a result of these changes. The maps were created using a stakeholder-led Bayesian network model and scenario development, which was then linked to QGIS to display the results. The work was conducted as part of the South Atlantic Natural Capital project, being implemented by the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee and conducted by the South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI) in the UK South Atlantic Overseas Territories. It was funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office managed Conflict, Stability and Security Fund (CSSF). All project outputs can be found at the dedicated JNCC webpage

- Abstract
- Historically, and to this day, the coastal and inshore marine ecosystems and resources have played an important role in the Falkland Islands. Knowledge of these coastal environments is essential for their management, yet comprehensive island-wide broad scale and fine scale coastal habitat maps are lacking. Such maps could form an important baseline from which to measure future change.
The DPLUS065 Coastal Habitat Mapping project aimed to fill this critical gap in coastal knowledge. The three-year project, concluding in March 2020, was grant aided by the Darwin Initiative through UK Government funding. The project utilised medium resolution satellite imagery, other geospatial data and local expert knowledge to develop broad scale coastal margin (terrestrial, intertidal and subtidal) habitat maps for the Falkland Islands. Where there was significant uncertainty in these broad scale maps, or in response to specific priorities from stakeholders, higher resolution habitat maps utilising very high-resolution satellite imagery or bespoke imagery captured using aerial drones were developed. The resultant habitat maps create an essential baseline, providing a basis for use in future planning, decision-making and monitoring.
The project brought together experts from SAERI, Oregon State University, the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee, Shallow Marine Surveys Group, Falkland Islands Government and Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands, representing the leading edge in remote sensing, ecological knowledge and field expertise.
This webGIS presents some of the spatial outputs from the project, including:
1. a digital map of 1956 aerial imagery
2. a broad scale habitat map for the Falkland Islands
3. fine scale coastal habitat maps in locations of interest to stakeholders
4. aerial imagery captured by drone

- This online tool presents the results from a sub-project part of the Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) project focussing on identifying key areas for marine megafauna in the Falkland Islands’ waters to inform MSP. The study was conducted in collaboration between SAERI and BirdLife International and funded by Darwin Plus (project DPLUS027). Some layers representing the distribution of human activities can be overlapped with the individual species’ core-use areas. The analyses involved combining tracking and at-sea sighting data, Kernel analyses, extrapolation to non-tracked colonies using simple distance-bathymetry models and weighed average with conservation status and data quality scores (an upcoming publication will detail the analytical framework).

This GIS map has been designed as an interactive online tool providing technical information on the 4 following main areas:
Renewable Energy Resource,
Geography, Geology and Climate Data,
Areas of Human Interaction, and
Ecology.
The GIS Mapping has been developed for landowners and decision makers to better understand their land and make an optimal use of the resources available. It is a key component of the Rural Energy Project under the Falkland Islands Government Rural Development Strategy Action Plan.
This project has been funded by the Falkland Islands Government Rural Development Strategy. The Rural Development Strategy Steering Group would like to thank Mr Andrew Bunbury, Park Hood Belfast, Dr Jim McAdam, United Kingdom Falkland Islands Trust, Dr iLaria Marengo, South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute and Mr Andrew Crighton, Falkland Islands Development Corporation, for all their work to produce this useful decision-making support for the Falkland Islands Community.

- The SAERI DarwinPlus083 project “Soil map and online database as climate change mitigation tools” also known as the Falkland Islands Soil Mapping Project (April 2018 to October 2020) was funded by the Darwin Initiative through UK Government funding. It aimed to deliver a national soil class map, tools for local landowners to improve land management sustainably and provide a baseline for peat and erosion extent to monitor anticipated changes in soil properties and peat brought about by climate change.
The soil mapping was carried out using digital soil mapping with spatial covariates (e.g. topography, geology, habitat classification, Sentinel-2 imagery) and field observations, which were linked using a trained neural network model. Over two field seasons (2018/19 and 2019/20) 200 points were visited across the Falklands. At these points soil samples were collected for lab analyses, field descriptions were made to inform soil classification and a penetrologger was used to measure resistance to penetration. The information gathered in the field and data obtained in the lab were then applied to the soil model.
This webGIS presents the maps produced by the project. All maps are in 30 x 30 m resolution.
