At the same time, a separate subsample 10g in weight is dried at 105°C overnight, or to a constant weight, to determine the moisture content. The 10g moist peat sample is placed in a 500ml wide neck flask. A solution consisting of 2g Calgon detergent in 200ml of de-ionised water is added to the flask and shaken. The flask is then left to stand overnight. After standing overnight the flask is shaken by hand thoroughly for 1 min and then poured over a brass screen of 100 mesh size. The peat is washed on the screen using a rubber hose attached to the tap, avoiding high pressure jet stream. A 2 % HCl solution is added to dissolve any carbonates present in the soil. Continue washing until the water passing through the sieve is clear. Pour off the excess water from the sieve and put the screen plus fibrous material over 0.15mm to dry at 105°C overnight. The dried fibrous material is then transferred from the sieve to a tared plastic weigh boat and the weight in grams recorded.
